California Hotel Workers Ergonomic Standard

The Cal/OSHA Standards Board’s new standard (Cal. Code Regs. tit. 8, § 3345) for hotel housekeeping musculoskeletal injury prevention is effective July 1, 2018. This new standard, as part of the state’s mandatory Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) at Cal. Labor Code Ann. § 3203, requires each employer covered by § 3345 to establish, implement, and maintain an effective, written, musculoskeletal injury prevention program (MIPP) that addresses hazards specific to housekeeping.

Reminder: 2018 Minimum Wages for California Localities

Effective January 1, 2018, the California state minimum wage increased to $11 per hour for employers with 26 or more employees and $10.50 for employers with 25 or fewer employees. Also, effective on January 1, 2018 and unless otherwise noted, the following California city/county minimum wage rates increase to the following amounts:

  • Belmont: $12.50 (effective July 1, 2018)
  • Berkeley: $15 (effective October 1, 2018)
  • Cupertino: $13.50
  • El Cerrito: $13.60
  • Emeryville: $15.60 (56 or more employees); $15 (55 or fewer employees)
  • Los Altos: $13.50
  • Los Angeles (city and county): $13.25 (26 or more employees); $12 (25 or fewer employees)
  • Malibu: $13.25 (effective July 1, 2018)
  • Milpitas: $12 ($13.50 effective July 1, 2018)
  • Mountain View: $15
  • Oakland: $13.23
  • Palo Alto: $13.50
  • Pasadena: $13.25 (26 or more employees); $12 (25 or fewer employees) (both rates effective July 1, 2018)
  • Richmond: $13.41
  • San Diego: $11.50
  • San Francisco: $15 (effective July 1, 2018)
  • San Jose: $13.50
  • San Leandro: $13 (effective July 1, 2018)
  • San Mateo: $13.50 ($12 for 501(c)(3) nonprofit)
  • Santa Clara: $13
  • Santa Monica: $13.25 (26 or more employees and effective July 1, 2018); $12 (25 or fewer employees and effective July 1, 2018)
  • Sunnyvale: $15

Some rates do not increase in 2018.
