Junior Hockey Player Classified as Nonemployee

On December 20, 2017, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation (S.B. 483 and S.B. 486) clarifying junior ice hockey players as follows:

  • As nonemployees in the Michigan Workforce Opportunity Wage Act. Specifically, the act does not apply to an individual who is 16 years of age or older but less than 21 years of age in his or her capacity as an ice hockey player for a junior ice hockey team that is a member of a regional, national, or international junior ice hockey league.
  • Nonemployees as relates to working away from home, when the team is a member of a regional, national, or international junior ice hockey league.

These laws are effective March 20, 2018.
