Breastfeeding Civil Rights
On January 8, 2018, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed legislation (A.B. 2294) to include breastfeeding and expressing milk to the protections under the state’s Law Against Discrimination. Under the new provisions, it is a civil rights violation for an employee to be fired or otherwise discriminated against because of breastfeeding or expressing her milk during breaks. The law also requires employers to provide reasonable break time each day and a suitable location for an employee who is breastfeeding to express her milk in private.
The law became effective immediately upon signing.
