Ban on Cellphone Use While Driving

Effective June 1, 2018, and according to R.I. Gen. Laws § 31-22-31, Rhode Island bans drivers from using a phone for calling or otherwise communicating while driving, unless use is caused by an emergency. However, drivers may use a hands-free device to operate their phone while driving. Violations incur a penalty of $100.

The state already prohibits texting while driving.
