Domestic Workers Ordinance

On July 27, 2018, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan signed the Domestic Workers Ordinance covering domestic workers (both employees and independent contractors) who provide paid services to an individual or household in a private home as a nanny, house cleaner, home care worker, gardener, cook, and/or household manager. The ordinance provides domestic workers with all of the following rights and protections:

  • Entitlement to Seattle’s minimum wage.
  • Specified meal periods and rest breaks.
  • A day of rest for live-in workers after working more than six consecutive days.
  • Hiring entities are prohibited from retaining a domestic workers’ original documents (for example, a passport) or other personal effects.

The ordinance is effective July 1, 2019.
