While “ownership” in a brokerage arrangement is not new to the market, our approach to it is. Many brokerages and consulting houses will claim to give their agents ownership of their books of business or brokerage “shares”, but there is usually a huge catch.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Can you sell your book of business?
  • Are you free to pursue your clients if you leave your firm.
  • If you decide to leave your brokerage can you maintain your community and industry relationships, without interference from your current firm?

If you answered No to any of the above questions then you do not own your book, your brokerage does.
